What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a state of focussed attention and absorption. Hypnosis, coupled with relaxation, is an extremely powerful clinical tool. While they are hypnotised people are particularly responsive to suggestions, and this property can be used to great effect therapeutically. Suggestions can be given for an individual to experience the world in different ways and this can be used to re-live and resolve past events.

Hypnosis is not a therapy by itself but when used as an adjunct to other therapies it can improve their effectiveness. In particular, gains made during therapy have been found to persist for longer when hypnosis has been used.
